Maritime security and the private sector – presentation at London symposium
Increasing concerns about the number of attacks against merchant vessels in the Gulf of Guinea were the topic of a recent symposium in London. The event was co-hosted by BIMCO, IMCA, the International Chamber of Shipping, OCIMF and the ITF. It brought together a diverse range of speakers who looked at piracy from different angles.
For my short presentation, I was asked to look at the role of the private sector in relation to law enforcement activities at sea in the region. While the shipping industry’s main concern are public-private partnerships in Nigeria, based on a memorandum of understanding between various companies and the Nigerian Navy, I had a brief look at different security challenges and the lack of maritime security capacities in all countries throughout the region.
